Optoisolators are a type of solid-state devices designed to provide a reliable form of electrical isolation between a control system and the electrical components it is controlling without the need for wiring. The HCNW4504-300Eis an example of an optoisolator and its operation is based around a photovoltaic output and transistor.
The HCNW4504-300E is constructed from an infrared LED coupled to a photovoltaic output, linked to a NPN transistor. When the LED is illuminated it generates a current which is carried through the photovoltaic output, consequently saturating the transistor and providing an output signal. Additionally, the four connectors on the HCNW4504 act as the input, output, power and ground connections which allow the device to be powered up and used in a range of applications.
One of the most common applications of the HCNW4504-300E is a gate degreeing circuit where a current source is required to reduce the start-up surge of a gate that is driving a power MOSFET or IGBT. The HCNW4504 is connected between the gate power supply and the gate of the MOSFET or IGBT to create a ‘soft start’ operation. In this case the LED is coupled to the gate power source and provides current through the photovoltaic output in order to saturate the transistor and provide current to the gate.
The HCNW4504 can also be used to provide a low-voltage protection for a DC-DC converter circuit. In this case the HCNW4504 is connected between the input voltage and VCC in order to sense a low input voltage condition. Here the LED receives the input voltage which is converted into a current via the photovoltaic output and is then passed to the transistor allowing it to be used as a voltage-sensing interface. As the input voltage falls below a specified value the LED ceases to be illuminated and the current is reduced, resulting in the transistor being switched off and cutting the power supply to the DC-DC converter.
The HCNW4504 is also used in a range of industrial and medical applications. In industrial systems, the HCNW4504 can be used to maximum machine safety where it provides an additional layer of isolation between two systems, preventing electrical failure or a possible short circuit. Similarly, in medical applications the HCNW4504 can be used to provide electrical isolation between two systems, allowing a safe connection between the two without the possibility of electrical shock or damage.
