Working Principle
The working principle of the HCPL-3000 relies on two main concepts, namely Hall effect and current sensing. The Hall effect is an electrical phenomenon when an external magnetic field is present in proximity to a conductor, and the current passing through the conductor is perpendicularly affected by the field strength. In the HCPL-3000, when a metallic object or contact is detected, a sensing head on the sensor’s surface produces a magnetic field which is detected by a Hall element. The current generated by the Hall element is then passed through an internal amplifier and sent to the output.
The current sensing part of the device works in similar fashion. A resistor is placed between the sensing head and the Hall element, and when current passes through the resistor, a proportional voltage is created and passed through the device’s amplifier and output. This current sensing is a major asset of the HCPL-3000 since it allows the device to measure the current passing through the contact, providing extremely accurate measurement and repeatability.
The HCPL-3000 is powered by a voltage source ranging from 0 to 5V, making it easy for users to integrate it into their system and take advantage of advanced application options.
