Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are used to isolate electronic circuits electrically while transmitting signals between them. Optoisolators, specifically logic outputs optoisolators, contain phototransistors,photoSCRs, or optical amplifiers to enable logic-levelsignal transmission. The HCPL-0708-560E is a logicoutput optoisolator manufactured by Avago Technologies, designed primarily for Isolation inremote sensing applications.

The device package is a standard half-pitch 8-pin DIP package. It offers a higher packing density than larger signal optoi-solators, allowing it to be used in applications where space is a concern. The device is isolated from the input by a 4000Vrms (min) galvanic isolation barrier. This barrier isolatescircuits from each other so they can operate at different groundpotentials without interacting with one another. This isolation allows itto be used in applications such as remote sensing for currentmeasurement and detection, where ground offset problems wouldotherwise exist.

The HCPL-0708-560E operates through an LED input port that is optically isolated from theoutput phototransistor. An input signal, typically at 0 to 5V logiclevel, is applied to the LED input that goes through the isolationbarrier and is optically coupled to the phototransistor. The phototransistor then makes or breaks the output connectiondepending on the voltage level of the LED input. The device alsocontains a short circuit protection circuit that safeguards againstunexpected short circuit current.

The efficiency of this device is determined by the opticalpower from the LED to the phototransistor, and the leakagecurrent between the phototransistor and the output. The LED radiatesspecifically within its required wavelength, with the optimumefficiency occurring at -4V, resulting in a propagation delay of20μs (max). The LED input environment has a maximum operatingvoltage of 5. 25V, and a maximum operating current of 8mAduring any 10ms period, while consuming only 1. 25mA.

The HCPL-0708-560E is designed to operate atoperating temperatures ranging from 0°C to 70°C. This allowsit to be used in a wide range of environments, including industriallocations and places with high humidity. It features 1MΩ internalisolation for the LED input and output which helps to minimize interference from other electrical components. The device alsofeatures an internal antistatic discharge protection circuit tofurther protect it from damage.

The HCPL-0708-560E is suitable for a variety of applications,including, but not limited to, remote sensing, current measurementand detection, and electric fence systems.
