Upon being triggered, the LED will then emit an infrared signal which is directed toward and captured by the photodiode. The photodiode then converts the received infrared signal into an electrical impulse which triggers the MOS transistor, allowing a current to flow.

The output of the MOS transistor is then able to drive the logic level through the push-pull output, depending on the status of the current, either directly driving it “high” or grounding it “low”. Aside from the “push-pull output” feature, the HCPL-2631#020 also has its TTL compatible optically coupled input terminal which enables direct coupling between TTL logic and electromechanical relay.
