HCPL-5701

Optoisolators are devices used for transferring digital and analog signals between two electrically isolated circuits. The optoisolator HCPL-5701, built by Avago Technologies, is a type of optoisolator that utilizes a photovoltaic output and a transistor. It is suitable for applications that require isolation up to 5 KVrms for 1 minute and it boasts an open collector output to be used for direct connection to LEDs.

The HCPL-5701 incorporates a high speed, single channel phototransistor optoisolator that uses synthetic plastic encapsulation. The optoisolator is designed to be connected directly to either a carbon-zinc or alkaline battery, and its output transistor can be used to either control a thyristor or drive an LED. The device has an input-output isolation rating of 5 KVrms for 1 minute. Its isolation capacitance between input and output is less than 5pF. The transistor output is capable of sourcing up to 16mA of current.

The HCPL-5701 operates with an input supply voltage between 4.5 to 26.5 volts DC and an output voltage from 0.8V to 18V. Its open collector output is designed to be used for direct connection to LEDs and its operating frequency range is typically from 0.1 KHz to 2MHz. Its maximum switching frequency is typically up to 5MHz. The device has a maximum power dissipation of 250mW and a minimum output voltage drop of 0.4V at 10mA.

Working principle: The working principle of the HCPL-5701 optoisolator involves a light emitting diode (LED) acting as the input port of the device. When current passes through this LED, it emits light which is then detected by the phototransistor at the output port. This in turn triggers the output port of the device which controls the completion of the isolation circuit. The output voltage is then switched between 0 and 5V to indicate the presence or absence of the LED input.

Application: The HCPL-5701 optoisolator finds its applications in electrical isolation of signal transmission, protection of low-power peripherals from transients, and control of all kinds of loads like lamps, relays, solenoids, and motors. This device can also be used in building motor control circuits where a low- power control signal is to be isolated from the high-power motor control circuitry. It can also be used in protection circuits for microcontrollers and embedded systems.
