Optoisolators - Logic Output

Optoisolators – Logic Output is a form of optoisolator that use a light-emitting diode (LED) as its input device and a phototransistor or even sometimes a photo-diode as its output device. This process thus isolates the input/output of two different circuits, preventing logical operations from being disrupted by electrical noise present in a circuit. The HCPL-643K is an application field example of such an optoisolator, and below, its working principle and application field will be explored. The HCPL-643K is a product from Avago, and it is an optoisolator which uses an LED as its input side and a phototransistor as its output side. The LED receives logic level input signals from 0V to 5V, and can source and sink. On the output side, it uses a phototransistor which is interfaced to a TTL, CMOS, or any other logic family. The photosensitive element used in the optoisolator senses the light-emitted from an LED and provides an appropriate electrical signal transfer across a potential difference. It is offered in two different package types namely, 6-pin DIP and SMT. The features of the HCPL-643K optoisolator include the ability to handle high speed data transfer rates up to1,500 kHz, to provide up to 1,500V of isolation, and to operate in temperature range of -55℃ to +125℃. It is also UL-approved and has 5mA of forward current. The maximum frequency range of the optoisolator is around 14.3 Mhz, and the maximum switching frequency of 10KHz, and the pulse width modulation frequency of 15KHz. In terms of applications, the HCPL-643K optoisolator is generally used in signal isolation, communication systems, motor control systems, and industrial automation. Due to the optoisolator\'s ability to provide isolation, it can be used in applications where the circuits need to be electrically isolated without providing any interference with the output signal. It also provides protection from ground loop interference, which can be caused by the electrical current which flows between ground in two different circuits. The working principle of the HCPL-643K optoisolator is also relatively simple. The input of the circuit is connected to an LED, which emits light when a signal is given. On the output side, there is a photosensitive element which is connected to the ground. When the LED is lit, the ground is connected to the Vcc source, creating the input/output isolation.
