C0G dielectric material (code: NPO or 0, NP0) is one type of ceramic materials with exceptional stability. This is why C0G and other related NPO dielectrics are often used to build RF capacitors. The HERF1008G C0G is a multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) also known as an array of rectified-ceramic-disc (RCD). With high stability and small size, HERF1008G C0G can able to withstand high temperatures, wet and dry conditions.
The HERF1008G C0G application field includes power supplies, inverter circuits, soft start circuits, voltage regulation, charging circuits, flyback circuits and other related operating conditions. This capacitor is especially suitable for applications that require fast response to varying loads, and high temperature stability over a wide range of operating conditions.
At its simplest, the HERF1008G C0G is composed of a series of metal-oxide varistors connected to ceramic-discs and wound in an array of metal frames. The metal-oxide varistors protect the connection to the ceramic disc by limiting the over-current that flows through it. To protect the capacitors, metal shields are added to the outermost layer of the capacitor. The metal shields, in combination with the metal frames and the ceramic discs, create a Faraday shield, which decreases the capacitance of the capacitor.
The HERF1008G C0G also works to protect against electrical surges or spikes. The voltage-dependency feature of the varistors helps absorb and dissipate the transient so that there is no damage done to the capacitor. The capacitor also takes advantage of its small size and the ceramic coating on its outer surface, to help absorb any voltage surges coming in contact with it.
The working principle of HERF1008G C0G is quite simple. In an alternating current (AC) configuration, it behaves as an inductor, storing energy in an alternating magnetic field as the current passes through it. This phenomenon is known as capacitive reactance. As the current passes through the capacitor, the magnetic field is used to store energy in the form of an electromotive force (EMF). The capacitance of a capacitor is determined by the amount of energy stored in it.
The EMF generated by the capacitor is used to reduce the voltage of the AC power supply. This reduces the voltage loss of the circuit, increases the circuit efficiency and helps in decreasing the power consumed. The HERF1008G C0G is also used in decoupling applications, where it helps in maintaining the desired frequencies of the signals flowing in the circuit.
