HIP1011CB belongs to the family of Power Management and Interface Controllers (PMICs). Specifically, it is a hot swap controller, which is designed to mitigate inrush current and protect downstream circuits.The HIP1011CB, manufactured by Intersil, is a monolithic high-side hot swapper along with voltage-level translation and pull-up/down resistors. It is an ideal solution for integrated hot swap applications where space is a primary concern.The HIP1011CB is applicable for a wide range of cross-voltage hot swap applications, whether the devices are powered from a single-voltage or multiple-voltage sources. The device allows dynamic current management of up to 1A of load current into a range of voltages.Features of the HIP1011CB include:-Pull-up and pull-down resistors to ground and VCC-High speed dynamic current limitation-Programmable soft start-Internal power limiting-Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection-Internal clock dividerThe HIP1011CB is an ideal solution for point of load (POL) applications, that require regulated output voltages. It is an integrated, self-contained and low-cost linear solution which works with a wide range of voltages.Working PrincipleThe HIP1011CB is designed to control a hot swap circuit, protecting downstream electronics from the inrush current of a board-level power management system. It operates by turning a switch on and off quickly when the voltage exceeds or falls below a set threshold.When the current is above the set threshold, the HIP1011CB allows the voltage to rise until the current limit set by the device is reached. Then, it maintains the voltage at the set current limit until the output voltage drops below the set threshold. At that point, the switch is opened to reduce the load current and prevent the voltage from rising again.The device features an internal programmable soft-start timer which limits the rate of rise of the output voltage during power-on. The soft start timer helps to reduce the voltage and inrush current at system start up.The device also features an internal VID (Voltage Identification) circuit. This circuit monitors the output voltage and compares it with the internal voltage reference. It then adjusts the output voltage to reach the best possible value to achieve highest reliability.The device’s protection mechanisms extend beyond hot swapping. The internal protection includes over-current protection (OCP) and over-temperature protection (OTP). The OCP monitors the peak current into the device. Meanwhile, the OTP monitors the internal junction temperature and shuts down the device in case of over-temperature.ConclusionIn summary, the HIP1011CB is an integrated, self-contained and low-cost linear solution designed for cross-voltage hot swap applications.
