Current Transducers

A current transducer is a device used to measure or sense the electric current of an electrical circuit. By converting a physical characteristic of the current, such as its voltage or its power to an electronic signal, signal processing can be employed to measure and monitor the current. The HLSR 50-SM is a device suitable for this purpose, due to its high precision and reliability as well as its robustness.

Working Principle

The HLSR 50-SM provides a high accuracy ratio transducer with a nominal output of 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 Vdc. Its operating principle is based on the conductance between two electrodes located on the secondary side of the transducer. A mV dc voltage is applied between the two electrodes which generates a current proportional to the magnitude of the applied voltage. This current is then converted to a user specified output signal by the internal circuitry.

The secondary side is designed with a differential amplifier to enhance the accuracy of the transducer. The gain of the amplifier is determined by the gain-setting resistor on the primary side of the transducer. The output current is proportional to the input current and the gain setting resistor determines the gain and linearity of the current transfer function.

The HLSR 50-SM is designed with a single PCB for the complete internal circuitry and is powered by a 24V dc source. The transducer features overload protection, over temperature protection and a built-in LED as indication of the operation status. It is equipped with two isolated channels that allow measurements of up to one hundred fifty amperes in both directions. The isolation of the two channels make it also suitable for two-wire systems.
