What is RF Mixers?RF Mixers are electronic components which provide signal conversion in a radio communications system. They provide a means of combining two different frequencies and their associated electrical signals to produce a new frequency and its signal. It is primarily a function of frequency conversion and modulation of information from one frequency band to another. This is done by modulating the information signal with the local oscillator and using the mixer to mix the two signals together.RF mixers allow both the RF signal that the receiver is amplifying and the RF signal that the transmitter is generating to occupy the same adjustable frequency range without conflicting with each other. EMF radiation generated by these signals can be eliminated or significantly reduced by using a bandpass or low-pass filter.HMC5683LC3BTR is a wide band passive RF mixer which is designed for the low noise and large signal dynamic range measurement at sub to 10GHz with a wide Frequency Mixing Ratio (FMR) range. It converts input signals from sub GHz to 10GHz with a wide dynamic range and low noise level for the low voltage operation. It has low insertion loss, wide bandwidth, and good linearity characteristics.The HMC5683LC3BTR is suitable for a wide range of applications that include Wi-Fi and 802.11ac and n-type Wi-Fi radios, point-to-point microwave systems, and even more wireless standards. This mixer can also be used in power amplifier and Discreet-Time-Signal-Processing (DSP) applications, such as cellular base station, test and measurement, military communications, broadband RF, and satellite communications.The main working principle of the HMC5683LC3BTR is based on an unbalanced mixer topology. This operates by taking the incoming signal and feeding it to a pair of diodes or field effect transistors (FETs). These diodes or FETs are reverse biased (which means their output voltage is lower than both their inputs) and are connected to two pairs of terminated loads.The input and output characteristics of the HMC5683LC3BTR depend on the terminations of the loads, which can be adjusted to affect the conversion efficiency or frequency rejection ratio of the mixer. Depending on these terminations, the input and output signals can be moved to either side of the mixer’s supply voltage. It is also possible to use the HMC5683LC3BTR in phase-sensitive applications, such as third-order intercept (TOI) measurement.Overall, the HMC5683LC3BTR is a wide band passive RF mixer which provides great performance both in terms of its low noise and large signal dynamic range. It is an ideal solution for a wide range of applications, including Wi-Fi, 802.11ac, n-type Wi-Fi radios, point-to-point microwave systems, broadband RF, and satellite communications.
