RF mixers are key elements in RF system designs by inter-converting RF and IF signals. As an important component in RF chain, correct function and performance of an RF mixer have a great impact on the system performance. The HMC615LP4E is a four-channel RF mixer, and it is designed for wireless applications with wide IF bandwidth from 1MHz to 1000MHz. It comes with 12GHz RF frequency and has a phase offset of 70° within the entire frequency range. It has a very high linearity and excellent noise figure.
The HMC615LP4E is based on a monolithic GaAs IC process designed to provide dual conversion with excellent dynamic performance over a large input power range. It features an integrated high linearity single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch which provides flexible operation and can be used for frequency hopping, antenna switching and dual path operation which is required in many wireless applications. Moreover, it also offers single-ended and differential ports for flexibility of mixer implementations. With its optimized port impedances, the HMC615LP4E can be easily integrated into a wide range of systems.
A working principle of the HMC615LP4E is simple. It takes in an RF signal and in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) local oscillator (LO) signals as inputs. The RF signal and the LO signals then pass through a CMOS switch which connects to a pair of balanced mixers. The RF and the LO signals are mixed together in the two mixers and produce a baseband signal which consists of sum and difference frequency signals that are separated from the IF filter. Finally, the IF signal output from the filter is then connected to a power detector for measurement of RF power. Additionally, it also features a balanced input/output coupler which offers excellent rejection of the undesirable out-of-band signals.
The HMC615LP4E is suitable for applications such as low noise amplifiers (LNA), pocket cellular basestation receiver, software-defined radio (SDR), upconverter, downconverter and frequency synthesizers. It provides extremely low noise figure over a wide frequency, low phase noise performance and high linearity over input power range up to 22 dBm. It operates from a single +3.3V supply voltage and has been packaged in an surface-mount package.
The HMC615LP4E is highly integrated, cost effective and reliable device and is suitable for a variety of wireless applications. With its wideband IF port, it gives design engineer flexibility to use any IF frequency in their designs. The device offers high linearity, superior noise figure and low power consumption which are essential for demanding wireless applications.
