RF Mixers – HMC623LP4E Application Field and Working Principle
RF Mixers, which are also known as a frequency mixer, are components that allow signals from separate sources to communicate over a shared path. The basic operating principle of RF mixers is a combination of two or more signals of different frequencies into a single signal. This single signal results in mixed products of the signals’ frequencies, as well as image frequency products.
The HMC623LP4E is an RF mixer developed by Analog Devices, Inc. It is a high-performance passive quadrature mixer that has an input frequency range from 4 GHz to 6 GHz. When compared to active mixers, this mixer requires a minimal supply current and generates low-noise conversion gain. Working Principle of HMC623LP4E
This RF mixer has an integral low-noise local oscillator and a passive mixer core. The configuration of the local oscillator is based on an LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), and the signal is combined with the input signal in the passive mixer loaded with diode networks. The image frequency and the desired product are present in the output of the mixer.
The working principle of the HMC623LP4E is illustrated in Figure 1. In this figure, the quadrature mixer is seen with an amplifier and LC VCO to form an integrated radio front-end. The RF input signal is amplified by a low noise amplifier and the local oscillator signal is generated by a voltage-controlled oscillator.

The combination of these two signals takes place in the mixer, which produces the sum and difference product. The difference product is generally referred to as the image-frequency signal and can be easily blocked using the image-reject filter. The network present in the filter is optimized for a particular frequency separation between the input and local oscillator signals.
In a nutshell, the HMC623LP4E is ideal for applications where high linearity, low noise conversion gain and low power consumption are required. Its wide frequency range and excellent image rejection further contribute to its ability to deliver optimal performance.
