BackgroundThe HMC637 is a high-power RF amplifier module that provides fast settling response, low distortion and extended temperature range from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. It is designed to cover frequencies from 500 KHz to 30 GHz for applications in mobile communications, radar, defense and instrumentation sectors. FeaturesThe module features a high-power gain of 29 dB, input and output impedance matching, low noise performance of 1.5 dB, high power output of 9 W and fast settling response of 45 ns. The device also provides excellent opto-coupled logic control interface with integrated over-temperature protection. ApplicationsThe HMC637 is designed specifically for RF signal amplifiers in wireless communications, instrumentation, radar and defense sectors. It is highly suitable for amplifying low-level RF signals to higher level signal strength. In addition to that, the module is also applicable for amplifying wideband signals for up to 30 GHz. Principle of OperationThe basic principle of operation of the HMC637 is to amplify RF signals through high power current amplification. The signal input goes through an input impedance matching network for optimized signal source impedance and then through RF multiplexer. It is then amplified in a cascode amplifier chain to achieve the high-power performance. An integrated thermistor and over-temperature protection circuit ensures stable function throughout its designed temperature range in case of a fault occurs.
