RF switches are electronic elements, usually used in the RF signal systems, having the ability to selectively turn on or off the connection of one or more path of a particular signal path. They can be divided into two categories: single pole single throw (SPST) and single pole double throw (SPDT). HMC641A is a broadband analog switch that belongs to the latter category. Application FieldHMC641A is designed for high performance and low power application in a wide noise immunity area. It is generally used as a switching or routing device for broadband applications, like CATV, broadcast and satellite video and audio systems. It can also be used as a multiplexer for microwave and other RF applications. The wide bandwidth and low insertion loss of HMC641A makes it suitable to be used in systems requiring high frequency signal operation.Working Principle The HMC641A is a high speed, low distortion, logic controlled SPDT analog switch. It operates by supplying a logic voltage for the control line, which links between two ground terminals and the power supply. When at logic “high”, the switch is closed, turning the connection between the two ground terminals on and connecting the two ports of the switch. When the logic voltage is “low”, the switch is disconnected, creating an open circuit between the two ground terminals. The HMC641A switch is built on an advanced CMOS process, which gives it a signal-to-noise ratio of >60dBc and an harmonic distortion of ≤ [0.5] db across a frequency range from DC to 6GHz. This makes it suitable for applications such as broadband satellite, CATV, broadcast and microwave systems.
