The HMC701LP6CETR is an ultra-low noise active split clock generator that is typically used in local oscillator and clock generation applications in RF transceivers. With a frequency range of 6.0 to 9.8GHz, excellent phase noise performance of an -154dBc/Hz offset 10kHz from the carrier, and ultra-low phase jitter of 0.8fs (12kHz to 20MHz) rms, the HMC701LP6CETR is ideal for a wide range of applications, including military and commercial radios, communications systems, and test and measurement equipment. The device is also ideal for phase detector and loop filter applications in frequency synthesizers.
The HMC701LP6CETR is based on a patented Active Split Clock Generator architecture. The device utilizes a high frequency reference crystal oscillator to generate an external reference clock around 6.8GHz. This reference clock is then split into two phases and each phase is sent to a low-noise amplifier, whose output is then sent to two toggle switches that create a periodic series of clock edges. The clock edges push-pull a differential output voltage to produce a differential clock output. The active split clock architecture reduces common-mode noise on the differential output, which helps reduce out of band noise while increasing immunity to common mode noise on the input of the clock buffer and improves upon single ended output clock generators.
The HMC701LP6CETR uses two RF transistors to amplify the reference clock before splitting it into two phases. This provides a low noise and distortion output. The two-stage design also isolates a system’s internal clock and reference paths to prevent the reference clock from degrading the system’s performance. This helps to ensure that high performance is maintained, even in very challenging high speed and noisy environments.
The HMC701LP6CETR features a wide range of features to facilitate system integration.
