The HMC764LP6CETR from Analog Devices is a fractional-N frequency synthesizer covering a frequency range from DC to 36 GHz. It provides an integrated single-chip solution for a wide range of microwave and millimeter-wave applications including wireline and wireless communication systems. The synthesizer contains a low noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a double-balanced mixer, two analog dividers, a phase-locked loop (PLL) and a high-voltage switched-capacitor (SC) filter.
The HMC764LP6CETR provides the high-frequency clock signals required to generate radio frequency (RF) carriers and LO signals in radio transmitters and receivers. It enables frequency agility and coherency between transmitter and receiver and also offers excellent linearity across the tuning range. It can be used as a clock generator, a frequency synthesizer, a PLL, or a frequency divider. It also supports fractional-N switching and supports modulation of the reference frequency.
The frequency synthesizer is based on a double balanecd mixer with a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) to generate customer specified RF outputs with minimum phase noise and spurious performance. The output frequency is determined by the fixed reference frequency and a programmable output divider. The output frequency can be programmed over the range of DC to 36 GHz in 1 kHz steps. The output frequency can be controlled either by an internal or an external reference clock.
The HMC764LP6CETR also has additional features to enhance performance. These include an integrated high-voltage switched-capacitor filter that eliminates unwanted harmonics and images; an adjustable output power detector to ensure output levels remain within predetermined limits; and an output amplifier for boosting output power to the required level. The synthesizer can be used with either an external voltage control or an on-chip software PLL for more accurate frequency control.
The HMC764LP6CETR ensures robust operation in changing environmental conditions with its high signal-to-noise ratio and low phase noise. It also offers excellent reliability due to its integration of switching, filtering, and amplifying into a single device.
