RF Amplifiers
The HMC718LP4E is a monolithic GaAs 12Gbps limiting amplifier designed to provide a very high level of small signal gain and ultra wide bandwidth from dc to 12GHz with very fast rise/fall times. It is a digitally controlled variable gain amplifier (VCA) with a gain control range of -30dB up to +2dB and a tracking error of typically 0.4dB over frequency, temperature, and voltage. It is meant to be used across multiple application areas including digital video transmission, high bit rate data transmission, pulse position modulation, and pulse code modulation-based systems.
The HMC718LP4E operates on a single 5V supply with a maximum current consumption of 250mA. It has four control pins which allow the gain to be altered in four independent steps. Furthermore, an external resistor can be used to provide a continuous current to offset the gain when desired. The amplifier also has a built-in limit feature which limits the output at 6mV for switching signals. This allows high speed operation of the amplifier without the need for limiting resistors.
The HMC718LP4E has a minimum small signal gain of 12dB with typical gain of 13.5dB up to 8GHz.
