The RF signal passes two paths in parallel. The first path is the attenuation path which consists of three serial stages that together form the attenuator network. It is made up of PIN diodes and series inductors that set the attenuation level. The second path bypasses the attenuation network and passes the RF signal directly to the output port.
The switching control of the PIN diodes is determined by the 3-bit output from the DAC. It is programmed by a serial digital control word. The digital control word is stored in the internal 3-bit digital memory and controls the attenuation range. This range is variable along with the input voltage. For example, an 8V reference voltage is used to produce an 8dB range with a 0.1dB resolution. By changing the 3-bit digital control word, the applied attenuation can also be changed.
The HMC712LP3CETR provides users with the ability to switch from one attenuation setting to another quickly and accurately. It is highly suitable for a variety of RF applications requiring calibration and control of power for various mediums, and is especially useful in communication systems. Its fast switching performance and its 3-bit attenuation range result in a precise and programmable attenuator.
