HMC773A Application Field and Working Principle RF Mixers are a type of nonlinear active device used to mix two or more frequencies together. This creates a new signal with a frequency of the sum and difference of the original signals. They are widely used in radio circuitry and its applications, such as radio receivers, transmitters, receivers, modulators, and demodulators. The HMC773A is an RF Mixer by the company Hittite Microwave Corporation (HMC). The HMC773A RF Mixer is a high-performance MMIC mixer designed to operate from 70 MHz to 8GHz. It features wide bandwidth, low conversion loss, and excellent intermodulation performance. It also features a low-noise figure and a high input P1dB compression point to accommodate high-power input signals. The HMC773A is particularly suitable for applications in the test and measurement, cellular base station, military communication, and software-defined radio markets. The HMC773A is built using high-performance GaAs MESFET process and 0.5um gate length devices. It has an integrated balun built in for single-ended to differential conversion. The device provides good input and output terminations for single-ended and differential input/output signals.The typical working principle of an RF Mixer is based on the nonlinearities of the medium of transmission. A nonlinear component is configured such that the incoming signal is mixed with a locally generated signal. This mixing creates a new signal with the frequency of the sum and difference of the original signals. This operation is known as heterodyning. The nonlinear component is typically a diode, transistor, or an integrated circuit (IC) such as the HMC773A.The HMC773A is designed to operate in several modes. It can operate as a single-balanced mixer, balanced mixer, or active multiplier depending on the load impedance and frequency of operation. In single-balanced mode, the HMC773A is used with a low-impedance external load to reduce the LO leakage. In balanced mode, the HMC773A is used with an external balun to convert the single-ended input and output to a differential signal. The HMC773A can also be used as an active multiplier in applications such as harmonic multiplying or frequency doubling. The HMC773A includes an integrated active bias circuit.
