The HMC813-SX is a versatile, broadband active mixer suitable for a variety of applications in linear, video amplifiers and modules. It has a wide frequency range of 1.8 GHz to 26.5 GHz and a linear maximum gain of 28 dB. This state-of-the-art integrated MMIC active mixer provides excellent linearity, low noise figure and high dynamic range characteristics at a low cost.

The HMC813-SX active mixer consists of a low noise amplifier, a frequency upconverter, frequency downconverter, and linearity/DC bias/amplitude control circuits, which is all fabricated on a single chip and made of high-performance 0.15 micron InGaP HBT MMIC processes. The integrated active mixer is designed to have low operating and linearity current, to reduce temperature drift and front-end noise, while maintaining excellent linearity and dynamic range performance.

The working principle of the active mixer can be understood by the following equation, which describes how signals are modulated. Two signals, VLO (Local Oscillator) and RF (Radio Frequency), are input into the active mixer. The VLO should be at a much higher frequency than the RF signal, typically 10 times higher. The two signals are then multiplied together and the resulting output is the sum of the harmonics of the two input signals. These harmonics can be heard in the AM demodulation of an FM broadcast band.

The HMC813-SX active mixer can be used in a variety of applications, such as for digital up-conversion and down-conversion, providing intermediate frequency (IF) to RF conversion, RF video modulation, and broadband analog video signal processing.
