HMC870LC5 is a high performance wideband RF modulator from Analog Devices. It is a linearized current-mode modulator with extremely low power consumption, low voltage operation, and high flexibility. It is ideal for applications such as wireless infrastructure, microwave communications, satellite communications, and military and aerospace applications.
The HMC870LC5 has an 8-bit output resolution that supports a wide range of modulation schemes from QPSK, QAM, to M-ary ASK. It also has on chip 40–60 MHz frequency synthesis with zero-IF architecture and the ability to directly modulate wideband RF signals from 50 MHz to 6 GHz. An integrated RF matching network allow for a single port connection of the modulator.
The HMC870LC5 also has an extensive digital interface that facilitates the integration of the device into a digital signal processing chain. The interface supports all major signal processing functions such as channel bandwidth control, pulse width, pulse shape, gain control, frequency shift, modulation order, etc. The digital controls are flexible and easily programmable, allowing the user to tailor the modulation parameters for each application.
The working principle of the HMC870LC5 is based on converting digital input data into a linearized signal using a digital-to-analog converter. This signal is then modulated onto the carrier frequency using a baseband direct conversion architecture.
