Thyristors are a kind of semiconductor device that controls electric current and is commonly used in power electronic systems. A thyristor is constructed of a single terminal that is connected to the anode and three gate terminals. The gate terminals are connected to the cathode and grounded external to the thyristor. The HT34BRP is a kind of thyristor which has its own application fields and working principle.
First, the application field. Due to its reverse blocking capability, HT34BRP thyristors are suitable to use in AC-overload applications, circuit breaker, and on/off controls of a single-phase, a three-phase load, such as household appliances. Compared with other thyristors, HT34BRP provides more features, such as an extended wide range of power ratings and temperatures, a higher peak and surge currents and a curved forward voltage-current characteristic, so it’s the ideal choice for consumers and industries to design AC loads.
Next, the working principle. A thyristor is usually activated by a switching control circuit. When the voltage of each gate terminals connected to the anode is high enough, it will cause the thyristor to move from the off state to the on state. Once in the off state, the current flow from the anode to the cathode can be controlled by varying the voltage of the gate terminals connected to the anode. To return the thyristor to the off state, the gate terminals connected to the anode must be reversed or reduced in voltage to below the turn off threshold voltage.
The HT34BRP has properties of blocking reverse voltage and not turn on until the anode-gate voltage exceeds a certain threshold, which is also known as the turn on/off voltage. This turn on/off voltage actually depends on the device structure and the power levels need to change accordingly. When the anode-gate voltage exceeds its turn on voltage, the conduction state of the thyristor is turned on, thus taking the current to flow through it.
In summary, the HT34BRP thyristor is a power electronic device with many applications, such as circuit breaker and on/off controls of single-phase or three-phase loads. HT34BRP also has a certain threshold for its turn on/off voltage. After exceeding the turn on voltage, the HT34BRP conducts and supplies current, and after reduction in voltage below the turn off voltage, the thyristor is returned to the off state. HT34BRP is is a ideal choice for the consumers and industries to design AC loads.
