Power Factor Correction (PFC) is a technique used to improve the power factor in an alternating current (AC) power system. It is also known as power factor optimization. PFC involves controlling the amount of reactive power, by altering the phase shift or the waveform. This can be applied for different purposes, such as powering low-power electronic devices, reducing over-voltage, harmonic distortion, and improving efficiency in motor drives. The ICE1QS01 is a power factor correction application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which is designed to improve the power factor of AC loads up to a certain level.
The ICE1QS01 includes a complete power factor correction (PFC) functionality, including control and power circuitry. The power stage is based on a dedicated current control scheme, with a fast compensation loop architecture, and is designed to provide accurate control of input current for up to 16 kHz switching frequency. The control loop uses a fixed 0.7V bandgap voltage reference and an internal 0.6V voltage threshold generator, which is designed to regulate power factor linearly from 0.98 to 0.99 without the need of additional external components. In addition, the chip implements a soft start circuit to reduce the start-up current spike.
The ICE1QS01 has been optimised to operate with a wide input voltage range, making it suitable for applications such as battery operated equipment and lighting control. It is capable of operating with up to 65 VDC input voltage and 30W power output. The power conversion efficiency of the ICE1QS01 is typically more than 90%.
The ICE1QS01 contains a complete set of control circuitry including voltage references, voltage thresholds, an oscillator with synchronisation capability, a comparator, an over-voltage protection circuit and a power switch. The current control loop uses a dedicated current error amplifier with an adjustable gain and adjustable current sense voltage level.
