The ICS181M-51T is a low-cost yet high-performance Clock Generator, PLL and Frequency Synthesizer integrated circuit. It is designed to generate and/or synthesize precise frequencies and clock signals from any input reference frequency or an external analog clock. Its operating temperature range is from –40 to +85°C and its power supply voltage is 5.0V (+/- 2%).
The ICS181M-51T is ideal for a wide range of applications, including: automotive, mobile and wearable applications; industrial control; microprocessor and microcontroller frequency stabilization; and timing systems. It is capable of generating clock signals from frequencies between 1MHz to 100MHz and synthesizes them from any input reference frequency. It also has the ability to synthesize clock signals from an external, analog reference clock provided.
The ICS181M-51T has several features that make it attractive for applications requiring clock/timing devices: it is a self-contained device that requires no external components; it has low power consumption; it is highly linear; and it has fast settling time. Additionally, it has an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) for frequency-stabilized reference clock sources, and embedded watch-dog support. Furthermore, its two banks of integrated phase-locked loops (PLLs) can be used to tune and synthesize with adjustable bandwidth and clock jitter.
The ICS181M-51T supports both pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse duration modulation (PDM) output modes. In PWM mode, the ICS181M-51T generates a digital clock signal that is suitable for digital buses such as I2C, SPI, etc. In PDM mode, the device is capable of outputting analog clocks; this avoids common-mode noise issues typically associated with digital-bus systems. The ICS181M-51T also supports spread spectrum clocking (SSC), allowing the device to reduce energy consumption and generate lower EMI levels.
The working principle behind the ICS181M-51T clock/timing device is based on a phase lock loop (PLL) concept. The input clock is compared to an internally generated reference clock of the same frequency, and the frequency and phase difference between the two clocks is sensed using a phase-frequency detector. The output of the phase-frequency detector is used to close the loop, in which the output clock is adjusted until it is in phase and frequency-lock with the reference clock. It can also be used to adjust the frequency of the output clock by varying the reference frequency. The PLL algorithm used in the ICS181M-51T is based on a charge pump and a digitally controlled oscillator.
