Clock/Timing - Clock Generators, PLLs, Frequency Synthesizers - have become increasingly prevalent in almost every aspect of electronic engineering. The ICS581G-02 is a frequency generator intended to meet the demands of a wide range of clock and timing applications, from personal computers and communications systems to automotive, industrial and medical applications.
The ICS581G-02 can be employed to generate a wide variety of clocks frequency, such as 0.9, 1.2, 3.3, 15, 20 and 25MHz, at very low power consumption ratings while still providing exceptional noise and jitter specifications. The core of the ICS581G-02 consists of a high resolution programmed oscillator (PROG), which is capable of creating the ideal clock for any application with high accuracy. This oscillator also contains an embedded phase-locked loop (PLL) to lock the frequency, thus providing high frequency stability.
In addition to its impressive frequency range, the ICS581G-02 is capable of saving time, energy and cost due to its very low power consumption. The device operates from a single 1.2V supply, reducing total system active power consumption by more than 50% compared to conventional clock solutions. It also adopts a hierarchical architecture that allows for separate power supplies for different system functions, thus improving the overall efficiency. Furthermore, its low active power consumption enables it to run with a low standby current, thus significantly reducing “wall-plug power” consumption.
The working principle of ICS581G-02 is as follows. The unit takes in a reference clock signal as input and uses a high-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to accurately match the frequency and phase of the reference clock. The reference clock is a stable, low-skew clock signal that is used to compare the signals at the output of the DAC. The analog-to-digital converter (ADC) comparator then assesses the generated output signal and produces an error correction signal, which is fed back to the DAC to adjust it so that the output and input clocks have synced. This is the main function of the embedded PLL.
