The IDT5T9890NLGI is an integrated Frequency Synthesizer designed for high-performance embedded clocks. It integrates a low jitter voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), a charge pump, pre-scaler and dividers all on a single chip. This is an efficient solution due to its wide range of outputs, which can range from 1 to 18 outputs and from a range of frequencies from 33MHz to 500MHz.Working Principle
The IDT5T9890NLGI produces low-jitter clock signals of high accuracy and precision. This is accomplished through the use of a PLL designed to produce clock signals with an improved phase noise performance, a multi-modulus pre-scaler, wideband dividers and a bandgap reference.The input clock is split into two paths. One path is routed to the VCO, where it is used to generate a desired frequency, and the other path is routed to the multi-modulus pre-scaler. The pre-scaler can select any of 24 steps, including fractional frequencies and alternate waveforms. The output of the pre-scaler is routed to a series of wideband dividers and compared with the output of the VCO. Any differences between the two signals are used to adjust the VCO frequency in order to maintain the desired frequency. The output of the VCO is then routed to the wideband dividers, where it is divided down to the output frequency.The device also includes a programmable charge pump that is used to adjust the VCO frequency. Adjustments can be made over the entire operating temperature range and provide the flexibility to adapt the output frequency to any changes in the environment.Finally, the device incorporates an integrated low-noise bandgap reference that provides a highly accurate and stable output with an extremely low frequency. This reference provides the stability necessary for the output frequency to be adjusted with very high accuracy.Conclusion
