TheIDT71016S20YIMemory is a high performance, low cost CMOS First-In/First-Out (FIFO) memory device suitable for high speed data buffering applications. The IDT71016S20YI has a 1024-bit FIFO, organized as sixteen 64-bit words. Each word is composed of 8 bytes, arranged as one 16-bit word followed by two 8-bit words. IDT71016S20YI FIFOs are fully programmable and offer several features, including: clock independent FIFO control, bidirectional FIFO data flow, programmableEmpty and Full flag, programmable FIFO clear and reset, and status and control registers.
The IDT71016S20YI Memory is ideal for digital device buffering applications. As a high speed buffer with large storage capacity, the FIFO can be used to store data from source devices at a much faster rate than the rate of access to the data. In data communications, a great deal of data is generated, but not necessarily immediately processed. The FIFO can be used to temporarily store data until it is ready to be processed. In addition, the IDT71016S20YI can be used to speed up data transfer rates in applications requiring high data transfer rates, such as video processing and high speed networking.
The IDT71016S20YI is based on a clocked first-in/first-out (FIFO) memory core architecture, allowing the FIFO to work independently from the clocks of any data transfer devices. The device uses two 16-bit registers—the Read Pointer and Write Pointer—to control the flow of data in and out of the FIFO memory. The write pointer is used to control the entry of data into the FIFO memory, while the read pointer is used to control the removal of data from the FIFO memory. The size of the FIFO can be adjusted by changing the size of the Read and Write Pointers.
The IDT71016S20YI also offers programmable empty and full flags that can be used to signify the state of the FIFO. The Full Flag is set when the write pointer equals the read pointer, indicating that the FIFO is full, while the Empty Flag is set when the write pointer is one less than the read pointer, indicating that the FIFO is empty.
