DC-DC converters are a common solution in many areas of technology, such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics, for the conversion of a source electrical energy to a usable form, i.e. for transforming the voltage and/or current of a direct current. Among these DC-DC converters, the IQ1205S is a particularly efficient solution for the conversion of Direct Current (DC) sources into user-friendly DC loads. It works on a wide input voltage range of 4.5-7.5V, and 9-18V, and in the IQ1205S, each channel supports a user selectable output voltage range, which means the output voltage can be independently set for each channel. This wide input voltage range and output voltage selection make the IQ1205S suitable for various different uses. Moreover, it also provides a low noise, pulse-by-pulse over-current protection, leading to great efficiency assurance.
To understand the architecture of the IQ1205S, one must understand the power flow. Simply put, the converter creates an intermediate link between the source voltage and the load by first converting the input voltage then converting it to the desired output voltage. The input energy is converted into intermediate energy stored in an energy storage element (usually a flyback inductor). When the stored energy is insufficient, the need is met by the rectified input energy. This intermediate energy is then processed by a control loop which transfers the energy in a regulated form to the output with the help of a power switch, thus making the output voltage fixed and controlled.
The control loop is the cornerstone of the IQ1205S, since it keeps the output voltage at a fixed level despite the changes in the input voltage. The control loop keeps the feedback voltage level steady by comparing it to the reference voltage using error amplifier, and then sending a signal to the power switching circuit to adjust the output voltage accordingly. The IQ1205S has an intelligent adaptive-PWM scheme to efficiently maintain the required output voltage and reduce input ripple current. The active-PFC PWM scheme also ensures good power delivery in the low load range.
Due to its immense efficiency and wide range of input and output power voltage, the IQ1205S is ideally used for data acquisition, remote sensing, metering and LAN systems. In data acquisition, the IQ1205S is particularly useful because it allows the generation of low noise power signals from voltages up to 18V.
