DC-DC converters are a common solution in many areas of technology, such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics, for the conversion of a source electrical energy to a usable form, i.e. for transforming the voltage and/or current of a direct current. Among these DC-DC converters, the IQ1205S is a particularly efficient solution for the conversion of Direct Current (DC) sources into user-friendly DC loads. The IQ1205S is a fully isolated two-channel(s) DC/DC converter available in two input voltage ranges, 4.5-7.5V and 9-18V, and offering an output voltage over a wide range of 0.7V to 7V, with great reliability and efficiency.

The IQ1205S DC-DC converter is especially designed to address the needs of applications in the area of embedded systems, consumer electronics, Low Power Data Acquisition (LPC), etc. It is a highly efficient, high power, isolated, non-isolated, two stage, synchronous, twin-channel DC-DC converter with wide output voltage range of 0.7V to 7V, and typical operational undulation of 10%. It works on a wide input voltage range of 4.5-7.5V, and 9-18V, and in the IQ1205S, each channel supports a user selectable output voltage range, which means the output voltage can be independently set for each channel. This wide input voltage range and output voltage selection make the IQ1205S suitable for various different uses. Moreover, it also provides a low noise, pulse-by-pulse over-current protection, leading to great efficiency assurance.

To understand the architecture of the IQ1205S, one must understand the power flow. Simply put, the converter creates an intermediate link between the source voltage and the load by first converting the input voltage then converting it to the desired output voltage. The input energy is converted into intermediate energy stored in an energy storage element (usually a flyback inductor). When the stored energy is insufficient, the need is met by the rectified input energy. This intermediate energy is then processed by a control loop which transfers the energy in a regulated form to the output with the help of a power switch, thus making the output voltage fixed and controlled.

The control loop is the cornerstone of the IQ1205S, since it keeps the output voltage at a fixed level despite the changes in the input voltage. The control loop keeps the feedback voltage level steady by comparing it to the reference voltage using error amplifier, and then sending a signal to the power switching circuit to adjust the output voltage accordingly. The IQ1205S has an intelligent adaptive-PWM scheme to efficiently maintain the required output voltage and reduce input ripple current. The active-PFC PWM scheme also ensures good power delivery in the low load range.

Due to its immense efficiency and wide range of input and output power voltage, the IQ1205S is ideally used for data acquisition, remote sensing, metering and LAN systems. In data acquisition, the IQ1205S is particularly useful because it allows the generation of low noise power signals from voltages up to 18V. It can also be used in medical equipment, where it allows the measurement of safety-critical vital signs without power fluctuations. Meanwhile, the remote sensing application enhances the capability of telemetry systems while the low power metering systems done through this converter facilitates the detection of low power consumption for various end user applications. Lastly, the use of the IQ1205S in LAN systems allows the low power transfer of data to and from networking equipments.
