Thyristors are a class of semiconductor devices, which are silicon-based bipolar four-layer structures. They exhibit a “latching” behavior, which allows them to remain in their “on” or “off” state until a trigger signal is applied to them. This feature makes them highly suitable for controlling high voltages and currents with very high efficiency. The most basic type of thyristor is the silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), also referred to as a thyristor or rectifier.
