Conversely, when the IRKL56/06A is in its off state, the gate terminal is driven to a level at least one volt below the SCR turn on voltage. This prevents current flow between the anode and cathode and the device does not conduct.

In short circuit protection application the IRKL56/06A is used to limit peak current so that the electronic circuit is protected from power surges or other power source anomalies. It is also used to protect against accidental and intentional overload conditions in applications that require such protection.

The IRKL56/06A is also used in voltage controlling of motor or motor-driven loads. In such applications it can be used as a reverse switch or a switch to turn on and off the motor. It is also used in heat transfer control applications. In this application the IRKL56/06A acts as a temperature control switch.
