IRU3037CFPBF application field and working principle
The IRU3037CFPBF from Infineon Technologies is an advanced high-performance Current Mode PWM integrated circuit with a wide range of applications in the field of DC to DC power conversion. It is mainly used in applications such as synchronous rectified buck and COT converters for notebook PC, tablet PC and server power platforms. In addition, it is also used in Active Clamp Reset Forward, Active Clamp Sync Forward, desktop PC power, Peripheral components and LED lighting.
The IRU3037CFPBF integrates several features suited to the above-mentioned applications. It is capable of switching up to 20V and can handle up to 3A of output current. It also has a programmable soft-start feature to reduce inrush current during start-up. The integrated bias regulator and start-up circuit simplifies the external design and lowers the bill of materials.
In addition, it is also equipped with a programmable auto-restart mode that allows it to recover from accidental short circuit or open loop conditions. The chip is capable of adjusting switching frequency independent from load current. This is done using the external RSENSE resistor. The lower the sensing resistor is, the higher the power stage switching frequency is. The switching frequency can be adjusted up to a maximum of 1MHz. Furthermore, the device is capable of disabling the power stage either by an external signal or via an internal timer.
When it comes to its working principle, the IRU3037CFPBF uses a voltage mode control scheme which contains a voltage loop error amplifier, a high and low side driver, a PWM comparator, and a power stage. The error amplifier amplifies the difference between the desired and actual output voltage as well as providing voltage-level reference. The processor then processes the reference signal and generates a PWM signal to regulate the power stage.
The voltage loop error amplifier then takes the amplified signal, which contains a DC offset voltage and a PWM signal and reduces to a level which is compatible with the low side and high side of the power stage. The low-side and high-side drivers then take the reference signals from the error amplifier and generate appropriate gate signals to control the power MOSFETs. The power MOSFETs then switch at a predetermined frequency to regulate the output voltage.
