The ISL4238EI-T is an RS-485 transceiver. It is designed to enable long-distance data communications for applications in industrial automation, aerospace, and medical fields. This transceiver is designed for use with a 1.8 V to 5.5 V power supply. It allows data transmission over twisted pair cables in applications having either full-duplex or half-duplex communication. The on-chip feature set includes a receiver and transmitter with integrated power-up transducers, while the transceiver’s features also include ±15 kV electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and thermal shutdown protection.

The ISL4238EI-T is fabricated using Intersil’s BiCMOS process. It allows for high speed data transfer with a minimum data rate of 1Mbps. With its ultra-low power, the ISL4238EI-T can operate with a supply voltage of up to 5.5V and with a supply current of only 70 µA. Moreover, it is also capable of supporting data rates up to 100Mbps while consuming only 320 µA of supply current.

This device includes an integrated differential transceiver interface, as well as a slew-rate-limiters, allowing the user to select between fast and slow slew rates. Slew rate limiting reduces the output transitions and ensures maximum signal integrity in applications with fast switching edge speeds. Slew rate limiting is achieved by dynamically varying the drive strength. As the device’s slew rate is varied, it allows the effective date rate to be changed.

The ISL4238EI-T also includes an integrated independent receiver data valid indicator (RDV). This indicator is used to indicate when the receiver has a valid signal level. As long as the RDV signal is asserted, the transceiver can only encode data. This feature is designed to prevent transmission of invalid data due to unexpected errors.

The ISL4238EI-T also includes two integrated receiver-level programmable data-recovery detect functions. These functions are used to monitor the signal quality at the receiver and determine if data can be accepted. When signal quality drops below the programmed level, the receiver outputs a low logic signal (DRSL) at its input. This low logic signal indicates that the transmitted signal contains unacceptable levels of noise or jitter.

Additionally, the transceiver includes an integrated differential data strobe output that is used to indicate start-of-frame (SOF), which is useful in ensuring transmit-receive synchronization. It also includes an integrated receiver mute function. This allows the transceiver to open its input buffer when a high logic signal is present at a defined control input (XMUTE). The receiver mute control (XMUTE) is used for externally controlling the transmission of the data.

The ISL4238EI-T has a wide supply voltage range, which supports operation from 1.8V to 5.5V. This allows the device to be used in a wide range of applications. In addition, it provides up to 15kV ESD protection to ensure reliable operation under harsh environmental conditions.
