ISL4486IUZ Application Field and Working Principle

ISL4486IUZ is a device from Intersil Corporation which belongs to the interface family, specifically to the Transceivers category. It is a fully-integrated CMOS transceiver for high-speed infrared communications applications. This device is specially designed for interconnecting and controlling data exchange between two infrared encoder-decoder systems. It is suitable for application in remote control, transfer of multi-bit data, and low-power and low-cost infrared optical transmission.

ISL4486IUZ is a two-channel transceiver which uses a single-lead differential receiver with a maximum data rate of 30 Mbps at a 2 Mbps data rate. It uses a MECH-2 preamble type detector which is connected to two optocouplers, with each optocoupler connected to one of the two receivers. The detector is used to detect optical modulated signals while the optocouplers are used to discriminate between the two channels. The received signals are then fed to the differential receiver circuitry.

The transceiver features a low-power quiescent current of only 0.5 mA, and a minimum optical sensitivity of -12.5 dBm. It also supports baud rates up to 8 Mbps and supports Adaptive Gain Control (AGC). It has built-in optical encoder and is able to detect signals at frequencies up to 1GHz. The transceiver also includes a high resolution 8-bit A/D converter to get the input signal from the device’s optocouplers.

ISL4486IUZ supports up to four frequency bands and can be tailored for infrared transmission by adjusting the width of the data pulses. The transmitter circuitry also supports advanced performance features such as Adaptive Pulse Width Control (APWC) which can adjust pulse widths depending on the input signal, and Adaptive Clearing Time (ACT) which shortens the transmission overhead. The transmitter also has built-in modulation control and modulation adjustment to meet the requirements of different protocols.

The ISL4486IUZ’s working principle can be summed up as follows: first, optical signals are transmitted from one device to another, then the transceiver assesses the quality of the signal, then it’s passed through the A/D converter and processed by the signal conditioning circuitry. Afterwards, the receiver circuitry processes the signal before it’s sent to the optocouplers. Finally, the signal is fed to the differential receiver circuit. The whole process is repeated to create a continuous data stream.
