Working Principle
The ISL6131EVAL1Z board is based on the ISL6131 Low Dropout High Efficiency Synchronous Step-Down DC/DC Converter. The ISL6131 synchronous buck converter is designed to produce a regulated output using a buck topology. It operates from a 3.5 to 16V input range, and can support output voltage from 0.8 to 4.0V in 0.1V increments.
In the ISL6131EVAL1Z board, the integrated compensation circuitry requires no external components or programming of the loop compensation components for stable operation. The VOUT, Pot input is used to vary and fine tune the output voltage. The VIN potentiometer used to drop the VIN voltage before it is applied to the IC and prevents the IC from shutting down in case of overload conditions. The PGOOD/OVLO connection indicates the status of the output voltage and for output overvoltage protection.
The ISL6131EVAL1Z board is capable of operating as a unidirectional or bidirectional converter. In bidirectional mode, the output voltage is able to rise and fall. This is helpful for powering devices which variously require different voltages, or need to discharge energy form their load. Such as when powering a DC motor, the motor is able gain control of the supply voltage and drive itself by taking current from the output of the converter.
The ISL6131EVAL1Z board features an on-board or external sense resistor for high-accuracy current limit and current monitor. A Power Good/UVLO connection indicates the status of the output voltage and features an adjustable overvoltage protection of up to 8V by setting RES OVLO voltage. The board can be easily powered using a 0V to 16V DC source.
