ISL6146EFUZ is a family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) designed specifically for TV backlights, LCD monitor and notebook LCD panels, as well as other display applications, such as AMOLED displays and automotive LCD displays, etc. This PMIC family is compliant with OR and Ideal Diode techniques for achieving excellent power savings and lowering system cost. The ISL6146EFUZ is a single chip solution for both OR and Ideal Diode functions reducing complexity and decreasing design cycle time.
OR Controller
The OR (Open-Rectifier) controller applies the concept of OR to n-channel Synchronous Rectifiers which helps to reduce the voltage drop when driving large currents by allowing one of the rectifiers to have a voltage near the input voltage. In addition to improving efficiency due to reduced voltage drop, the OR controller also reduces design complexity by allowing the use of elimination of the bulk capacitor used in conventional designs. The bulk capacitor is used in conventional designs to hold up the output when the rectifier is off.
The ISL6146EFUZ includes a unique OR logics architecture which eliminates the need for an additional voltage comparator or reference and enables the controller to remain in OR as long as it receives valid PWM/EN signals. This simplifies design by eliminating the need for an additional voltage monitor, and also lowers cost by reducing the number of components used.
The OR controller also provides a feedback loop which is used to ensure that the duty cycle of the PWM signal remains stable regardless of external changes. This enables the OR controller to maintain the output voltage in steady state, even under varying input and load conditions.
Ideal Diode
The ideal diode feature in the ISL6146EFUZ PMIC family helps to eliminate power losses due to bypass diodes and ac losses in the power path. It uses an integrated MOSFET along with a feedback loop to emulate the behavior of an ideal diode. When enabled, the ideal diode feature allows current to only flow from the higher voltage source to the lower voltage source, while blocking the flow of current in the opposite direction. This feature helps to reduce power losses due to the bypass diode.
The ISL6146EFUZ also includes a unique logic architecture to enable or disable the ideal diode depending on the input and output voltages. This eliminates the need for additional logic devices and other components, simplifying design and reducing cost.
This PMIC family also features a soft-start feature which ensures that the output voltage is brought up from its initial state in a controlled manner. This helps to minimize spikes and surges in the system, and improves system reliability.
In addition to its OR and ideal diode functions, the ISL6146EFUZ PMIC also features a PGOOD signal which is used to indicate the health of the power stage. The PGOOD signal is used to monitor the output voltage and will be asserted if the output voltage is within its specified range. The PGOOD signal helps to monitor the health of the system and reduce the risk of system failure.
