ISL6402IV-TK application field and working principle

The ISL6402IV-TK is a versatile low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator with a power-saving pulse-skipping mode that allows very low operating current. This LDO is capable of operating with an input voltage range from 2.5 V to 6.0 V, while providing a regulated output voltage of 1.2 V or 2.5 V. The ISL6402IV-TK is primarily used to voltage step-down 5V or 3.3V supplies to lower voltages such as 1.2V or 2.5V, however it also features reverse-battery protection and thermal protection. This LDO not only provides high accuracy, excellent line and load regulation, but also has low dropout characteristics.

Application Field

The ISL6402IV-TK is designed for use in numerous applications where low-voltage regulation is necessary such as processor core voltage, digital power supplies, and power management for various portable electronic devices. This component is well suited for battery-operated equipment such as notebook and netbook computers and cellular phones that require a low dropout, low on-resistance, low quiescent current, and high power supply rejection. This LDO is also well suited for low-power applications that operate from a single cell or a two-cell Li-ion or NiMH battery pack such as portable audio players, digital still cameras, and wireless handsets.

Working Principle

The ISL6402IV-TK is based on a series-pass linear regulator. To achieve the low dropout voltage, the series pass element is placed between the input and output, allowing the LDO to transfer power to the load while providing a regulated, low output voltage. The output voltage is compared to the reference voltage, and an error signal drives the series pass element such that output voltage is maintained at the desired level. The error signal is generated by a band gap reference, which is programmed for either 1.2V or 2.5V.

In addition to the series pass element, the ISL6402IV-TK features a power-saving pulse-skipping mode that reduces the half-power supply current and enables very low operating current. In normal operation (above the current limit) the power stage supplies the load with a constant voltage, while in the pulse-skipping mode, the regulator skips pulses based on the load current to reduce power consumption.

The ISL6402IV-TK also features thermal protection, reverse battery protection, and an enable/sleep pin for power savings when the chip is not active. The status of the enable/sleep pin is monitored by an on-chip comparator. When the enable/sleep pin voltage is below 0.3V the status of the enable/sleep pin is low, and the output voltage is forced to near 0V. When the enable/sleep pin voltage is above 0.7V, the status of the enable/sleep is high, and the linear regulator is enabled.
