The ISL6444CA is a feature-rich, embedded controller-specific, high-power DC/DC converter with integrated MOSFETs. Working Principle

The ISL6444CA DC/DC converter operates using a synchronous current-mode control topology. In this topology, one switch is controlled by the content of the on-chip timing capacitors and one is driven by a separate external switching circuit. A current-sense amplifier senses the current through the top switch and feeds an error signal to a comparator circuit. The output of this comparator feeds a pulse-width modulation (PWM) control circuit which drives an internal power MOSFET, which then turns the device on or off.

The output voltage of the device is controlled through the use of sense resistors. The main current path is monitored in order to adjust the duty cycle of the PWM control circuit in order to maintain a regulation loop, thus manipulating the output voltage to the desired level. During normal operation, the voltage across the sense resistors generates a voltage that is proportional to the output voltage. The voltage comparator then compares this voltage to the reference voltage produced by the internal error amplifier, and the resulting error signal is converted into a PWM signal, which is then applied to the output MOSFETs, ultimately controlling the output voltage.

In addition, the ISL6444CA has current-limiting and over-voltage protection features to help protect the system in the event of a short circuit or over voltage situation. The current-limit circuitry limits the output current during a fault condition while the over-voltage protection feature will milliseconds shut down the output if the voltage exceeds a predetermined threshold.
