ISL6521CBZ is a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) Voltage Regulators, which is a combination of linear and switching regulators that fulfills power management requirements. Specifically, it is a true, concurrent multi-phase controller providing a total of 3 phases of switchover control. This unique PMIC contains its own operational amplifiers, programmable switching frequency, an integrated switch-mode or linear regulator and other wide range of features. The ISL6521CBZ offers several different voltage regulator outputs and transfer paths to support the cost effective, highest efficiency designs. The main application fields of ISL6521CBZ are power converters and voltage controllers for notebook and desktop computers, as well as other power density sensitive applications. It also plays an important role in system power management, including power sequencing, power-down management, and LED lighting controller applications. The main block diagram of ISL6521CBZ is made up of five blocks, Clock Generator, Low Side FETS Driver, High Side FETS Driver, Error Amplifier and the SVID I/O and RESET. The Clock Generator’s frequency of operation is programmable. This oscillator can be programmed continuously between 200kHz and 1.5MHz. The Low Side Fets Driver is used to control and drive two low-side FETS in each phase. Each FET is connected to one of two drivers. Both the high side and low side drivers are robust, high-speed drivers and can be either enabled or disabled by logic low. The Error Amplifier block is the main controller and is responsible for controlling each phase of the regulation loop. The replica reference and the feedback signal have separate inputs, and the amplifier provides a gain of -15V/V to provide the proper amplification for the feedback voltage. The amplifier also provides programmable voltage offset and can be used to set the minimum regulation voltage. The SVID I/O and RESET is used to bridge the PMIC with an external Source Voltage Identification (SVID) controller. The SVID is a signal that helps the device identify the source voltage. The RESET block is used to reset the device when a power failure or other reset event occurs. The ISL6521CBZ is constructed primarily with high speed and low gain operational amplifiers to ensure the high performance, large current and wide range of regulation sources. The operational amplifiers enable the device to read the feedback signal and then adjust the other parameters to regulate the output voltage to the desired level. The ISL6521CBZ also has integrated feedback voltage detection and control. When the feedback voltage exceeds the programmed threshold, the device will shut off the power supply and switch to a low frequency oscillator mode that provides a lower voltage drop on the negative supply. This ensures that the output voltage is maintained at a constant level, avoiding any excess current draw or damage to the device. Overall, the ISL6521CBZ is designed to meet the needs of today’s stringent power management requirements. It has an extensive feature set, including multi-phase synchronous control, programmable clock rate, low side FET and high side FET drivers, and integrated switch-mode or linear regulator.
