The ISL6526EVAL1 is an evaluation board used to demonstrate the features and working principle of the Intersil ISL6526 high-current single-stage, non-synchronous buck battery charger controllers. The board is designed to evaluate the ISL6526 with 5A or 10A output current capability. The self-contained board includes an on-board DC power supply, battery simulator, output voltage sensing, temperature sensing, and a USB port for communications with a personal computer.
The ISL6526EVAL1 board can accept an input voltage as low as 3V and up to an absolute maximum of 75V. It contains three components of the evaluation board: an adjustable input voltage regulator, a programmable battery simulator, and an output voltage sensing board. The adjustable input voltage regulator is an AC to DC converter with ripple removal technology. It is used to provide a stable DC input voltage for the battery simulator and output voltage sensing boards of the ISL6526EVAL1 board. The programmable battery simulator is able to simulate a variety of battery chemistries including Li-ion, Li-polymer, Ni-MH, and NiCd. The output voltage sensing board is used to measure the output voltage of the charger controller. It is connected to the output of the charger controller and provides a voltage reading to the computer via the USB port.
The ISL6526EVAL1 evaluation board is designed to support multiple battery chemistries. It has the ability to charge up to five cells in series with a single output of the charge controller, as well as the ability to charge two cells in series with a split output. The ISL6526 is a non-synchronous buck battery charger controller designed to offer high output current for portable and fixed systems. The ISL6526 features a high charging current, short-circuit protection, current monitor, thermal monitor, over voltage protection, programmable input voltage, integrated low voltage supply, and output voltage accuracy of plus or minus 1%. The ISL6526 contains an integrated E-Fuse, which enables the use of an input current limit to avoid over-powering the system.
The ISL6526EVAL1 board is designed to provide direct-to-battery charging for a wide range of battery chemistries. The board includes overvoltage protection, as well as overcurrent and thermal protection. The overvoltage protection circuitry is used to prevent charging voltages from exceeding the maximum voltage rating of the battery. Overcurrent protection is used to prevent current overloads from occurring in the system, while thermal protection is used to shut down the system if the temperature rises beyond an adjustable threshold. Additionally, the board includes a short-circuit protection circuit that will shut down the system if a short is detected on the output of the charger controller.
In addition to evaluating the features and working principle of the ISL6526, the ISL6526EVAL1 board can also be used as a reference design for the implementation of a buck battery charger controller. The integrated features of the board make it well suited for a variety of applications where high-current charging, overvoltage protection, and temperature sensing are needed.
