The ISL6537A-6506EVAL1Z evaluation board is widely used for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS. It is considered a low cost and user-friendly option to explore design strategies and generate performance data. This evaluation board features the ISL6537A, a high voltage, current mode, step-down switching controller IC for synchronous rectified isolated DC/DC and AC/DC applications. It is capable of operating at 32 kHz to 2.5 MHz providing remarkable flexibility to designers.
The ISL6537A evaluation board provides designers with user-friendly features, such as a logic-controlled power connector, enabling On/Off and power cycling capability. This board also features dedicated test points for providing easy access to the gate drive signals of each MOSFET. This feature eliminates the need for external components and simplifies the evaluation process of the switching controller.
The board is supplied with components already populated, including a 7 A output inductor, two 20 A MOSFETs, and four 30 V low leakage and low ESR capacitors. In addition, the board also provides easily removable jumpers, shunts, heat sinks, trimming tools, as well as external DrMOS gate driver components for improvement of the switching performance. These features enable users to evaluate the maximum performance capability of the device.
The working principle of the board is relatively simple. The ISL6537A device contains an internally compensated error amplifier, a precision reference and features a cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection, adjustable current limit with spread spectrum current sensing, a fixed internal slope compensation, and a programmable dead time delay. The device also features optional compensation components integrated to support superior control of the switching frequency response.
The integrated high side and low-side gate drivers in the ISL6537A device continuously supply the switching FETs with the required gate signals for carrying out the power supply control. The error amplifier compares the voltage on the feedback pins with a 5 V precision reference voltage and amplifies the feedback voltage. The feedback voltage is used to adjust the pulse width of the output from the device. This adjustment allows precise control of the output current. This, in turn, provides precise regulation of the output power supply.
The ISL6537A-6506EVAL1Z evaluation board also gives users flexibility to design for various output power levels. The board could control output power supplies up to 200 W. The switching frequency can be set by the onboard resistor R36, and the user can select a burst frequency at value up to 2.5 MHz, depending on the power dissipation requirements.
