ISL6549CA Application Field and Working Principle

ISL6549CA is a integrated power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designed to reduce the complexity of providing power supply to systems as it integrates almost all functions needed to power up a system. ISL6549CA is mainly used in Notebook PCs, Notebook docking stations, ATX systems and other applications which require high power supplies. Working Principle

ISL6549CA is a combined linear and switching PMIC. It provides 3-phase architecture for VRM solutions for processors, DDR memory and graphics switching. Three isolated power stages are controlled by the pulse-width modulator (PWMs). Each of these stages is composed of two power switches and the feedback loop is generated by the current mirroring circuit. When the pulse width is changed, the output voltage is adjusted accordingly.

The ISL6549CA also has a dedicated power-Okay (PG) comparator output for each of the three channels which measures the output voltage against a reference voltage. If the voltage exceeds the reference, the PG output goes low and enables the gate control logic. On each channel, the linear and switching control logic is managed by a shared microcontroller. Once the reference is exceeded the linear driver is enabled and then the feedback loop is initiated.

The ISL6549CA uses a single chip solution which offers an efficient, reliable and high current solution for powering a system. Due to its 3-phase architecture, it is able to provide improved phase balancing in order to reduce current density and threshold effects. In addition, it provides accurate, programmable over-current protection which allows users to protect their devices from high current draws.
