Power Management IC (PMIC) is a crucial component in any electronic system. It’s responsible for managing, converting, and distributing the power throughout the system. Gate Drivers, as part of PMIC, are electronic circuits that are responsible for driving signals to the power switches, like MOSFETs, in order to switch them on and off. ISL6614BIBZ-T belongs to the PMIC-Gate Drivers family, and it has wide application field and different working principles.

ISL6614BIBZ-T is an 8-channel low-side MOSFET gate driver that is capable of sourcing 350mA of peak current per channel, with a switching frequency up to 1.1MHz. The 8 channels are so designed that the driver is capable of controlling the state of 8 low-side MOSFETs independently. ISL6614BIBZ-T is built with a low-side driver, which is one of the differences to other similar products. The low-side driver features a rail-to-rail output swing that is able to drive MOSFETs which work down to 0V. This makes the device suitable for battery-powered applications as it can be connected directly to a battery or DC voltage source. In addition, the low-side driver eliminates the need for level-shifting of signals. Consequently, the gates of the MOSFETs are less sensitive to over-drive failures and can drive inductive loads efficiently.

ISL6614BIBZ-T has a further feature that greatly increases system efficiency and safety. This is the independent PWM fault interrupts which work on both sides of the device. There is one fault input pin each for four of the channels and the remaining four shares one fault pin. All these 8 fault pins are input with a single 5V PWM signal, so the device can detect any observed fault related to the MOSFETs very quickly. This ensures that in case of a fault, the load is disconnected before any harm is caused to the system.

ISL6614BIBZ-T also comes with two integrated comparators for monitoring two enable and two inhibit signals, respectively. This enables the various parts of the circuit to be isolated from each other and helps to prevent any power losses or damage from incorrect operation.

ISL6614BIBZ-T is built with a unique output stage where an open-drain N-channel MOSFET is connected in parallel with an NPN bipolar transistor. This combination is capable of driving significant current and is able to drive lower MOSFET thresholds more efficiently. It requires very low operating voltage, enabling very low-power operation with high reliability.
