The ISL6740EVAL1 evaluation board is a universal DC/DC or AC/DC (off-line) switch-mode power supply (SMPS) evaluation board designed for use with the ISL6740 switching controller IC. This board is intended to provide customers with the experience of implementing and evaluating an ISL6740-based SMPS design.
The ISL6740EVAL1 board utilizes the high-efficiency, DRFB topology. It is an improved version of the CMFB topology used for many types of switch-mode power supplies. The “R” stands for “resonant”, and the DRFB topology uses a resonant element to provide a soft-switching transition from ON to OFF that reduces switching losses. This results in an increased efficiency, primarily at light loads.
The primary advantages of the ISL6740EVAL1 are its universal design, allowing it to be used for a wide variety of applications; and its customizable control features, allowing designers to easily tailor the board to fit the application needs. Its universal design allows it to be used for AC/DC or DC/DC topologies, with an input voltage range from 85VAC–265VAC (for AC/DC designs) and from 8V–24V (for DC/DC designs). Its customizable control features include adjustable switching frequency, adjustable valley switching and adjustable slope compensation.
The ISL6740EVAL1 board runs in fixed-frequency, current-mode PWM (pulse width modulation) mode. This PWM control structure enables constant-frequency, constant-duty-cycle (CDC) regulation for the output voltage. The ISL6740 EVAL1 has a very low-noise operation, with the PWM frequency adjustable from 30kHz to 150kHz by default, and it can be further adjusted up to 300kHz by modifying the hardware settings on the board.
The ISL6740EVAL1 board also has a dedicated loop compensation circuitry, which allows designers to quickly select and adjust the PWM control loop parameters for optimum performance. This loop compensation circuitry also helps reduce the complexity of the design process, as it allows designers to easily fine-tune the regulator with minimal trial and error. The integrated compensation network reduces the number of individual components needed to adjust and fine-tune the loop.
The ISL6740EVAL1 board has a number of protection features, including internal current limiting, over-voltage protection, and thermal shutdown. These features protect the board, the load, and the system as a whole, ensuring reliable, safe operation. The board also has a pulse-by-pulse current limiting feature which helps reduce power loss due to current spikes.
