The ISL9201IRZ is a highly efficient, 3-member linear cell, Li-ion battery charger from Intersil Corporation. This device is considered as a Power Management IC (PMIC) - Battery Chargers, as it is able to effectively provide charging and monitoring with minimal power loss. ISL9201IRZ is designed to provide economical, fast and reliable charging of 1, 2 or 3 series Li-ion cells, such as Li-ion 4.2V, 4.35V and 4.4V. Features of ISL9201IRZ include: a wide input voltage range of 4.0V to 8.25V; low dropout (LDO) regulator with adjustable output voltage range of 1.8V to 5.25V and up to 1.2A output current level; 5-cell MOSFET transistor switch (CTRL) with adjustable active delay control; internal thermistor voltage detection; and a reverse battery protection during low battery charging and use.The ISL9201IRZ operates in two different charging stages: constant voltage (CV) mode and constant current (CC) mode.In the CV mode, the charging begins when the battery voltage is below 4.2V, and is gradually increased until it reaches 4.2V, which is the end voltage value of the charging process. At this point the ISL9201IRZ automatically switches to the CC mode and the charging current is increased to the maximum set current level. The charging ends when the charging current falls below 0.2A.In the CC mode, the constant current is applied until the end of the charging cycle. During this stage, the PCB will be protected from any voltage surges or shorts with the Reverse Battery Protection feature. In addition, the thermistor voltage output from the device detects the temperature of the PCB and can be triggered to reduce the maximum charging current if the temperature exceeds the programmed value.Moreover, the CTRL pin of the ISL9201IRZ allows different standby time delays for the gate ON time. The external negative enable signal of the CTRL pin provides the possibility for an external power OFF signal for the gate ON circuitry.Overall, the ISL9201IRZ makes a great PMIC - Battery Charger solution, as it provides fast and reliable charging of Li-ion batteries.
