The ISL9203ACRZ is a four-cell, buck-boost DC/DC converter designed for compact, low-power, ultra-efficient power management systems in smart phones and other portable electronic devices. It is offered in a compact, 12-lead, 3 x 3 mm QFN package that is adapted for space-constrained, high-density applications. The device offers high efficiency, low-noise, fast transient response, and low component count, resulting in a low bill of materials (BOM).

Working Principle

The ISL9203ACRZ is a synchronous buck-boost DC/DC converter, integrating a low on-resistance buck switch, a high duty-cycle boost switch, a high efficiency low-dropout linear regulator (LDO), two control loops, two power switches, two low-dropout current sources, two short-circuit protection circuit, and other components in a 12-lead 3mm x 3mm QFN package. When the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the buck circuit takes over and the voltage is regulated to the desired output voltage by the internal PWM controller. When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the boost circuit is enabled, boosting the input voltage to the desired output voltage.

The controller then controls the duty cycle of the buck and boost switches to maintain the output voltage, allowing a small output capacitance and low output voltage ripple in buck mode, and boosting the input voltage up faster to the output voltage via the boost switch in boost mode.

The ISL9203ACRZ buck-boost converter offers a high efficiency current limit and over-temperature protection, as well as an over-current protection. The device also boasts a high efficiency (up to 96%) and fast transient response (1.5μs minimum for the load step current), conveniently storing the energy from the over-voltage input condition in the output capacitor and delivering it to the load in the over-voltage input condition, thereby eliminating the need for bulky external components.
