The ISL9205AIRZ is an advanced two-cell Li-Ion battery charger controller IC that provides highly integrated functions and reduces the components count and board space requirement. The IC integrates MOSFETs and low RDSon, low VCEsat output drivers, and is especially suitable for space- and cost-constrained designs. This IC features soft-start, fault protection, and thermal protection, which ensures a reliable, flexible and programmable operation. This makes it ideal for charging mobile phones, power banks, tablets, and other battery-powered devices.

Application Field

The ISL9205AIRZ is designed for applications such as portable and TV remote controls, cell phones, handheld devices, and portable navigation equipment. It is designed to provide a safe and efficient charging of 2S lithium-ion batteries with voltage range from 3V up to 6V. The IC integrates a current sense amplifier and a programmable power stage with more than 95% efficiency. Working Principle

The ISL9205AIRZ uses a nonlinear control loop for charging the cells in the battery. The charge voltage is compared with a reference voltage in a non-linear control loop. The difference between the two voltages determines the charging current. The current sense amplifier measures the amount of current flowing through the battery and feed this signal to the IC’s control loop. The IC then adjusts the output voltage of the IC in order to maintain the desired current level. The IC also has a thermal protection feature. This prevents the battery pack from overheating by lowering the charge current when the temperature of the battery exceeds a preset threshold. The IC also monitors the battery voltage and turns off the charge current whenever the battery voltage exceeds the specified threshold. In PRE mode, the IC slowly reduces the charging rate to minimize the amount of charge pulled from the battery. Finally, in FLT mode, the IC provides a low level of current in order to prevent over-discharge of the battery.
