JANTXV1N4100-1 Application Field and Working Principle
The JANTXV1N4100-1 is a two sided common anode, dual common cathode, low forward voltage, industrial grade, Silicon Zener diode. It is a voltage reference device specifically designed for use in equipment requiring a regulated reference voltage. JANTXV1N4100-1 application fields include linear and switching regulated power supplies, test equipment, precision regulators, A/D and D/A converters, switch mode power supplies, line conditioners and other thermo-electrical and security systems.
The main working principle of the JANTXV1N4100-1 is that it regulates the voltage to a reference level by the use of an internal, voltage dependent reverse PN junction diode. This diode can operate in the forward bias, reverse bias and the zener breakdown modes. When it is in the reverse bias, the formation of depletion region creates a high electric field at the junction points. At a specified reverse voltage known as the zener voltage, the diode starts to experience the zener breakdown. In this region, the voltage across the diode is relatively constant, while the current is extremely large when compared to the quiescent current. At the same time, a small current can then freely flow in the forward direction, allowing the voltage to remain lower than that of a standard diode.
The application of a current of a few milliamps through the JANTXV1N4100-1 ensures a highly stable voltage across the reverse-biased junction. This voltage will remain constant regardless of the amount of current through the diode, making the JANTXV1N4100-1 an ideal choice for setting up a reliable, accurate and constant voltage supply. Typically, the JANTXV1N4100-1 is used in conjunction with a resistor, capacitor and a transistor in order to form a zener regulator.
In a zener regulator, the other component acts as a current stabilising element. The capacitor is connected in series with the zener diode, which helps to smooth out any ripple in the input current, as well as providing a source of charge for the diode. The resistor is connected in parallel with the diode and provides a path for the excess current to flow, thus stabilising the output voltage. The transistor is the active element, serving to control the amount of current flowing through the diode in order to maintain the reference voltage.
The JANTXV1N4100-1 is ideal for applications requiring a high degree of accuracy and precision in the regulation of the output DC voltage. It has a low forward voltage drop, allowing it to dissipate less power when used as a reference voltage source. This also reduces the cost and complexity of the voltage regulator circuit in comparison to other types of diodes.
