Thyristors possess two distinct states, an “open” or "off” state, and an “on” or conducting state. This means that they can switch high currents with little power required to control the switching action. This type of thyristor is especially useful in applications where there is potential for large currents or voltages, as they are able to switch quickly and at high voltages. This type of thyristor is used in a variety of applications, such as motor controls, relay controls, and lighting control.
