Thyristors are solid-state devices that are able to control electrical current or voltage, to some degree. They are also known as solid-state switches, as they can be used to "switch" an electrical circuit on or off. One type of thyristor is the K2201GL, an ultra-fast unidirectional thyristor.

The K2201GL is widely used in electronic circuits that require high-speed switching, such as switching power supplies, AC drives, and DC-DC converters. It is also used in applications that require a relay-like response, such as lighting control. The conventional thyristor working principle is that the current through the thyristor is released after the control pulse is increased above 0.4 volts. The K2201GL thyristor reduces this voltage to below 0.2 volts and it is released immediately.

The working principle of the K2201GL is based on the current conduction. When the external control signal is applied, the latchup voltages that can be used to trigger the thyristor do not rise until the required current is applied. This allows for precise control of the conduction and precise control of the current throughput.

When the current applied overcomes the holding current, the voltage at the anode of the thyristor rises, and the thyristor switches to an on-state. The deterioration of the current conduction, the control current is increased above the latchup voltage. As a result, the thyristor frequently breaks up both current and voltage and it is automatically turned off.

The main features of the K2201GL are that it has a very low trigger voltage, high surge power capability, low on-state resistance, short turn-off time, and high current capacity.
