Introduction
The KIT12XS6EVM evaluation board is a reference design for controlling up to 6 high power LEDs utilizing Texas Instruments’ 120 mA constant current linear LED driver IC, the TPS61165. With the capability of driving 6 strings of 4 series connected LEDs at 18V or 12 strings of 2 series connected LEDs at 10V, this board is ideal for applications like large LCD backlights, where a high number of LEDs are used. This evaluation board makes testing and developing efficient LED control/lighting systems quick and easy. In addition to the TPS61165, the KIT12XS6EVM utilizes various other Texas Instruments components, such as the TPS22912A low voltage supervisor IC and an N-Channel MOSFET, to make it a very complete reference design.Application Field
The KIT12XS6EVM can be used in many applications where high power LEDs are needed. This includes LCD backlights, automotive lighting, traffic signals, and signage lighting. In each application, the KIT12XS6EVM can be used to control the current and brightness of up to 6 strings of 4 series connected LEDs or up to 12 strings of 2 series connected LEDs. The board also includes a shutdown pin that can be used to quickly turn off the LEDs in the event of an over temperature or low voltage alarm for greater safety.Working Principle
The working principle of the KIT12XS6EVM is relatively simple to understand. It utilizes the 120 mA constant current linear LED driver IC, the TPS61165, to control the current and brightness of up to 6 strings of 4 series connected LEDs or up to 12 strings of 2 series connected LEDs. The TPS61165 is connected to an external power supply. The voltage at the LEDs is regulated by the TPS61165, which is controlled by a pair of enable pins and non-overlapping enable pins (EN_0 and EN_1). When the enable pins are pulled high or low, the TPS61165 will adjust the current output to the LEDs in order to regulate the voltage. The board is also equipped with a shutdown pin that can be used to quickly turn off the LEDs in the event of an over-temperature or low voltage alarm. The TPS22912A supervisor IC is used to safeguard the LED strings. The IC monitors the LED bus voltage to detect signs of over temperature or low voltage conditions and can quickly shut down the LEDs if one of these conditions is detected. The IC also has hysteresis to filter out any noise on the LED bus voltage. The board also includes an N-Channel MOSFET, which is used to protect the ICs and LEDs from over-current caused by a short circuit. When a short circuit is detected, the MOSFET will turn off, discharging the current from the ICs and LEDs. This protects the ICs from overheating, and prevents the LEDs from being damaged.Conclusion
